My fellow diving student and I are going for our first SCUBA spearfishing attempt.  Where do you recommend we go?

Not asking your secret fish hole, just a place (either Monterey or Sonoma county) with easy entry, easy ocean condition, rockfish close by (small fish OK), and most importantly where we won't get in the way of other divers/hunters.

bluestar,
Great question.  You're going to get a great response on here.  I'd try Monterey, I find it's much more beginner friendly than Sonoma.  I'd go to one of the dive shops and tell them what you're doing (be very honest about your lack of experience) and they'll direct you to the right area.  My experience has been that on any given day in Monterey you can find very different conditions at the various beaches and coves (of course this is true up here in Sonoma, but seems to be less so, IMO).  Maybe this is because they all face in very different directions...?  Anyhow, hold out for a really nice day and be safe!

Have fun!  :violent5:

Good luck on your first spearing trip Blue Star, and what type of gun did you end up buying?

I would also say Monterey. Otter Cove to be exact.

If you want to try up north, Ocean cove, Still water cove or Timber cove are all nice and easy access. Just ask the locals were the boats are going in and out.
