Probably because they mistake them for seal and then realize it's a hairy fur ball and doesn't taste right.  Should help the ab population.

They don't know. Lol

But they are willing to take credit for successful shark conservation!  Although their bid to get GWS on the endangered species list failed. What a bunch of fuktards.

I wonder if they are now considering culling the GWS population to protect the fur bags?

The more these people propose the more confused they appear.

I agree with Rob.  It was my understanding that surfers in the Santa Cruz area, where otters exist, regularly saw decapitated otters, and knew how that happened.  How all of a sudden that is news is beyond me, unless DFW is making some pre-emptive political effort.

In related news, researches have observed a significant uptick in the number of attacks on environmental science articles made by outdoor enthusiasts. Since these articles typically contain very little meat, it appears unlikely that they are being intentionally targeted and consumed for their meager nutritional value. Scientists are unable to explain the aggressive behavior, but some speculate that climate change has caused an explosion in the population of bloggers, and that the increase in attacks correlates with a more general increase in the rate of encounters between recreators and sensationalized reporting.

You think I'm kidding? Further research is clearly needed! Glen, if you help me write up a solid proposal, we can split the grant money.

I think it's a poor article - period.  It's this quote that makes me think either the writer or scientist being quoted screwed up:  “As far as we can tell, a white shark has never eaten a sea otter.”

Oh yeah?

I think this caliber of reporting/scientific opinion can be attributed to either the failure of the public school system, or some of these people are simply educated beyond their intelligence, perhaps both.

It's difficult to discern the quality of the actual research being done when the baseline quality of news reportage is so bad. Especially with everything being online, very bad news stories mingle with solid journalism. I'm not saying that the research in this case is good or bad but it would be impossible to know that based on one iffy article with a couple of cherry-picked quotes.

I would tend to agree with you, if it was just this article, but nearly every environmental article seems to be a quote (or possibly quote out of context) from someone who doesn't know what is going on and summarized by an intellectual midget.

It's amazing how meaning can be so elastic in the absence of context.

I can tell the water conditions are not good just by reviewing these posts.  Not science just observation and not quoted or summarized but from a mental midget perspective.

I need to dive soon.  Shark week is melting what's left of my mind.
