Draining the Eustachian Tubes!!
« on: April 05, 2016, 11:08:19 PM »
I just spent a bunch of time diving in Brazil. (Lucky me) while I was there I was at a work conference of which many body gurus were around. I was bitching about my left ear not clearing well and a guy asked me if I knew how to drain my tubes. He said there is very little writing in the scientific world around this but that it works.. Especially with ear infection pressure. So he got on his glove (not for proctology you sick suckas on here) took a finger, had me lay down with face up, jammed his finger in my mouth and walla all the pressure in my left ear left!! Holy shit, do the other side please!! Next day I was hitting 80 foot with zero clearing struggle!

Simple to learn if someone shows you, but you can learn it by poking your finger around in the roof/back sides of your mouth. Study a chart that shows where the tube enters your mouth. It is right in front of your tonsils. If you gag you are to far back. You most likely won't feel the hole as it is small. It is a soft and flimsy area, if you rub or stroke the area mucus will start to drain out and it will unpressure your ear, you just have to practice and feel it out.

I share this because of my struggles with clearing and how much this has helped me to dive safer and deeper! I drain mine the night before, again the morning of and if there is pressure, again right while sitting on the yak.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. At the first sign of clearing trouble while diving, I will get back in the yak and eat/drink something. It just seems that jaw movement helps clear the pressure. Of course I will stop diving or move shallower if the pressure persists

You're sure it was his finger?  I mean eyes closed, something pokes you in the back of the throat and then you feel a discharge go down your throat.

Then you say "Do the other side!"

Sounds fishy

From the Abstract from JAOA Article:

"The current report discusses various treatment options, including the modified Muncie technique—a type of myofascial release administered inside the patient's mouth—for patients with eustachian tube dysfunction and its symptoms."
