Hey all here is a nice little breakdown from Dennis Hausler of what divers need to know to qualify for nationals.

Heres the story, divers that are interested competing in the 2017 nationals at Noyo Harbor in Fort Brag must join cencal and usoa. Then, if they want to try for a spot with cencal as they’re council for nationals, they need to compete in the 2 team meets ( 3 men or 2 person for mixed ). The top 5 mens teams will earn spots to dive under the cencal banner for nationals. If someone does not want to, or does not make the cut, then they can proposition another council, GLACD, Midwest, FL, Northwest are a few, and pay theyre dues to them along with USOA and dive under that council.

You MUST be a paid USOA and council member to compete. As for what it takes to compete? The tournaments are 6 hrs of diving, 20 fish max, 4 per species, 14” min on all, all DFW regs supersede lengths and quantity.

No chumming, electronics including cell phones, all hand powered boats and guns, gps allowed, most likely there will be ½ hr of travel front and back, with 6 hrs of diving.

Best Regards
Dennis Haussler

As I get more info on the dates and location of the events  I will try and post or feel free to contact Dennis,

Here is  the details on coral street species meet which is the first one.

May 14th coral street Monterey, this is a 3 man or 2 person mixed, team meet.

Event: Limited Species National Qualifier

Location:  Coral Street Beach, Monterey Bay

Zone:  Western Boundry: Point Pinos MLPA   /   Eastern Boundry:  Lovers Point Cove MLPA

Time:  8:30am launch with 30 minutes travel time - Hunt 9 to 3 - 30 minutes travel back to beach - Weigh in on Beach / Reserve the park location as back up in the event of bad weather (rain, etc)

Scoring: 1 point per fish - 20 points from weight - Max 21 points per fish

Species & Count:  8 best fish from "allowed" species as governed by DFW Regulations

LingCod (Max 2 @ 22")

Cabezon (Max 1 @ 15")

Greenling ( Max 1 @ DFW limit?)

Blue rockfish (Max 2 @ 11”)

Black rockfish (Max 1 @ 11”)

Kelp rockfish (Max 1 @ 11”)

Total of 8 fish can be weighed, DFW limits allowed for take but only 8 will count toward score.

Weigh in to be on the beach, or at the private park close by dependent on weather.

The lingcod and cabezon size limits are DFW, greenling will be announced when we get closer per DFW changes. Any undersize of DFW limits will be immediate DQ.

NO CHUMMING, ATTRACTORS, FISH FINDERS, OR SCOUTING ON SCUBA. I cannot stress these enough, this is a qualifier for next years nationals, and I expect everyone to play by the rules!!!!!!!

Huh, pretty unique rules. The small fish counts and smaller model lingcod on that side of the peninsula should make for a lot of really close scores. Sounds pretty neat!
