Abalone Jalapeno Poppers
« on: September 09, 2015, 09:12:53 PM »
Okay, I know this has been posted before, but I made these last night.
Slice the ab either down (this creates longer steaks), or across (this creates big circular steaks). I sliced it down. Then pound it.
Put a slice or two of jalapeno across the steak and sprinkle the entire thing with cheese. I used smoked gouda.

Roll it up length-wise (imagine how you would roll up a sleeping bag or a Therma-rest pad).

Pin it together with toothpicks, then roll in coconut flour, dip in egg, and roll in panko bread crumbs. Place on a wooden cutting board and put in the freezer for 30 minutes.

Fry until golden brown in HOT oil.

These were awesome. Be sure to serve to a crowd. Otherwise, you'll eat all of them and hate yourself for it.
Enjoy!

I'm curious. What is the purpose of putting them into a freezer prior to cooking?

Oh right...I've heard that cooling breaded fish or abalone before frying will prevent it from soaking up too much oil. No idea if that's true or not, but it's what I did.

That's why the tempura batter is always in an ice bath.

I find that it also helps the breading to adhere to the ab/fish more.

Do it! Easily the best and most unhealthy thing I've done with abalone.

I served this at a party and it went over great! Thanks for the idea mate. I also filled some with cream cheese that was also super good.

Fresh, well got it the day before. I didn't take a pics of the final product but mine looked quite a bit different from yours, maybe I over stuffed, but still good. http://imgur.com/5zkRWTn
