APTOS (CBS SF) — A competition for junior lifeguards had to be called off after more than a dozen great white sharks near the cement ship in the Aptos area south of Santa Cruz.

“Today I went up with Specialized Helicopters and we witnessed a once-in-a-lifetime-event.  We saw over 15 white sharks swimming within a quarter mile radius,” boat captain Giancarlo Thomae told KSBW.

Something has to be drawing them all to that small area, I would think.

So I loaded up the family and made the trek to the cement ship around midday Friday.  Scanned with binocs for a while with no luck.  Took a walk on the pier out to the cement ship, and a hook and line guy said that there had been three sightings on the right side of the pier.  i stuck around and sure enough, I saw one cross under the pier.  You could make out the body shape and the dorsal fin, but it never broke the surface.  Waited around and there it was again about 15 minutes later.  Really hard to judge the size, but it could have been 10 feet.  Just a large dark shape cruising methodically under the pier like clockwork.  I was really stoked, as I have always wanted to see one.

Wow... in high school I used to jump off the pier right at the ship and swim to shore for fun. Doesn't sound quite as fun now.

I would love to see one one day (from shore or a boat), it must have been quite a sight!

Went to West Port last year almost dove that spot because it looked great.  Then I saw that Randy Fry plaque, changed my mind.

Shark Week on Discovery Channel!  I suggest we watch as much as we can before swimming!
