Help with shaft line and crimps needed
« on: January 09, 2015, 03:37:51 PM »
The line on my Rob Allen is starting to get kinked.  I would like to buy some line and crimp my own to the shaft and bungee but don't know what size or type of line I should get.  I also will need crimps to match and don't know if a special crimping tool is needed or will any crimping tool work.

http://www.neptonicsystems.com/crimper.php

I bought the kit for with blue 300lb mono to match my RA spear.

Video of how to do it.

I am in San Carlos if you are nearby i could meet you and whip one up.  No way I am going to burn through 150ft of mono anytime soon.

you can get everything you would need to retie your own shooting line from neptonics.  really the only difference that needs to be taken into consideration is the diameter and # of the line you get.
The heavier the # the thicker it gets.  this is beneficial if you want the line to last a long time, or if you're shooting big fish.  downside is that it dramatically slows down shaft speed and accuracy on smaller guns= less than 50".
If you go with a thinner line and less #max, you'll get more range and better accuracy, but the more you let the line rub up on the rocks, obviously the quicker you'll get to its breaking point.
its also important to note the number of wraps you put on your gun.  unless it's a blue water gun, two wraps is the max.  if you can help it, only put on one if the gun is 40" or less. this will also help increase shaft speed and accuracy.
I personally get the thinner stuff and retie my own shooting lines about once a year. i'm in Santa Cruz on the weekends and up in Vallejo during the week, so I would be more than happy to help you out if you need it!

Thanks guys.  Wasn't sure if I should match what it came with or go lighter.  The stuff on it now seems like wire.  Is mono actually wire?  Still learning this stuff.

I will check the instruction video and let you know if I have any additional questions.

Better than trying to ram them with a kayak.

Do you think it was a cab that put that hole in your keel?

I'm actually pretty sure it was, I got kind of a good birds eye view of the monster cab while I was performing a backflip to exit my kayak. I would conservatively estimate the size of the cab that punctured my kayak at close 40".
