May I present: ABSCALIBUR
« on: June 02, 2014, 01:44:03 PM »
The legend of Abscalibur dates back nearly three weeks. A simpler time, when Sir RottieOwner and I, giddy from a long day of slaying dragons and other sea creatures, bemoaned our inability to take hard-to-reach monster abalone hiding in the back of caves. "Sure, there are 'ab swords,' " we said to each other as we sauntered down California's Royal Road 101 through Salinas, as the missionaries did hundreds of years before us. "But those are merely cut down rusty leaf springs.... surely there is a better way....."

"Well" I said, as I lowered my voice, "what if there was an abalone sword THAT WAS ACTUALLY A SWORD!"

The rest of the journey flew by as we discussed various designs, engravings, enchantments, curses, and, er, regulations.......  In the following days and weeks I spoke with machinists, engineers, patent attorneys, learned basic CAD, dusted off static engineering textbooks, and bought a bunch of stuff online. I pulled my head up from the computer, and we had a design!

35 3/4 inches long, 1 1/2 inches wide, and 1/4 inch thick. With a handle that DOUBLES AS A 7" GAUGE.

Friday came, and I paid a visit to my local metallurgist (read, metals supplier). We discussed the project, and settled on 316L marine grade stainless steel, with all sorts of fancy metals like chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. I also purchased some Blue Demon 316L welding electrodes to match, but mostly for the name. :)

Saturday disappeared in a whirlwind of cutting, grinding, polishing, and throwing out flap disks like they were going out of style. The Lord's Day was spent in modest garb, head bowed and covered, with hands together, prostrating myself before the benevolent Lincoln Electric ARC welder. When the smoke cleared, I had before me the one, the only (well, I made a few..), ABSCALIBUR.

I made a total of four with the handles, and two are already spoken for. I also have three that don't have the hand guard and pommel, with the paracord wrap.

$60 for a shorter 22" sword: 1 on hand
$80 for a plain ab sword: 0 on hand, can make one up in a week or so.
$120 for ABSCALIBUR: 4 on hand.

Usefulness?  Will it bend in the middle?

Spring steel from a leaf spring of a trailer.  proper diameter bend, weld a t at the end so you can twist.  only problem is length of your arm.
Dad, what's for dinner?

Wookie steaks

Are they good?

Ehhh, they're a little Chewy.

No way this is going to bend in any reasonable scenario. Before I chose the metal I spoke with a few engineers about elasticity, force it takes to pull an abalone, etc. Now that it's done, I've tried to bend it over my knee, and I can't!

So I pry this ab from a deep crack...it tumbles and sinks to an equally inaccessible position; maybe even getting a grip again. What then; pray tell?

Rest the ab bar against the foot of the abalone, it sticks on, and you pull it out like a lollipop!

Does it come with the firewood? Full cord?
