88 meters without fins- world record
« on: October 26, 2009, 12:34:51 PM »
Can you hold your breath for more than 3 minutes? Don’t try. You’ll just hurt yourself. One man who can do it is William Trubridge. He’s a competitive free-diver. He swims unaided to depths many scuba divers won’t go.

He practices at Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas. The calm water plunges nearly 700-feet straight down. These are perfect conditions for free-diving. He set the world record this year. Watch him dive 288-feet in 3:30. It’s impressive.

Yeah, he is bad ass!  I've watched his vid's before...   :notworthy: :notworthy:

There is one where he swims down into the Dahab Blue Hole (in Egypt) and through this tunnel out to sea.  The hole is like 55 meters deep and 30 meters long.  Imagine being able to hit 180', then cover 100' of the sea floor and surface again... oh yeah, and all without fins!  Boggles the mind.

Hey Glaucus,
Is this the same tunnel in the Red Sea that a female freediver tried to traverse last year and perished? Did you hear about that? She had already set at least one world record as I read it.

Oh, and that dude is one serious bad a--!!!!! :notworthy: :hello2: :notworthy: :hello2: :notworthy:

Never heard about that, but wouldn't surprised me.  There have been tons of deaths there.  I guess Egyptian authorities claim only 40 deaths, but that's 'cause they don't want to kill the tourism buzz.    That's a lot of deaths for calm water with no kelp or GWSs.

Sounds like there area handfull of outfits that will guide you through the arch, which is 55m.  I'm not scuba certified, but I do know 55m is f'ing pushing it on standard tank air.  55m!  Talk about a buzz!  You gotta be a moron to sign up for one of these trips unless you really know wtf you're doing.  Something tells me the PADI class recommends against going 180'.

Anyone else know much about ultra-deep scuba diving?

According to PADI anything below 130' isn't recommended for Recreational diving. You start getting into Tech. diving after that. Staged decompression stops and all. Not for me.

Yeah, that is definately mixed gas territory! Heck the limit at 130' is like 4 mins. That wouldn't even get you into the hole yet! Not for me either!

This was incredible.  Anyone else having trouble with the link just type in "william trubridge" on the youtube search and the 88 meter freedive should pop right up
