Join us at the RFA-NorCal Chapter's 9th Annual Randy Fry "Big X" Freediving Tournament on Saturday, October 13th, 2012 at the Pacific Star Winery on the

Open to all free divers — this tourney is in memory of the late, great Randy Fry - the avid abalone diver who founded the RFA-NorCal Chapter.

This event is co-hosted by the NorCal Skin Diving Club, one of the oldest free-dive clubs on the West Coast. There will be a speafishing meet following CenCal Rules with trophies for the best scores in the competition.

Support sustainable fisheries and our public fishing access and have a great time with good people. The Paciic Star Winery is located 11 miles north of Fort Bragg and is a private access section of the Mendocino Coast. It is rarely fished, and is slated to be closed to fishing next year due to the Marine Life Protection Act in California.

If competition diving is not your thing, there's another fun way to participate in the "Randy." For the second year, we will be hosting the Iron Diver Chef Seafood Challenge on Saturday night, with Iron Chefs go head-to-head in a judged competition to create the most fabulous dish from locally-caught, sustainably managed seafood.

Abalone, urchins, rockfish, rock scallops, octopus, sea vegetables, octopus may be just some of the "secret ingredients" by the Iron Chefs at the Randy Fry Big X this year. Iron Chefs will be looking for diver team members to help procure these ingredients.

Whether you are a competitive spearfishing expert or a great cook, or just want to learn about gathering seafood from the ocean, there will be a great weekend in store.

$40 entry fee, $60 the day of the event. Free camping Thursday, October 11th through Sunday October 14th. Wine tasting, hot chili lunch at the weigh-in Saturday, and our event t-shirt included. Online registration and more info at: http://randyfry2012.eventbrite.com/

Thanks for posting, Matt - you beat me to it.

This year, Pacific Star Winery owner Sally Ottoson is inviting some of her wine club members to be judges for the Iron Diver Chef challenge - they are donating the money to RFA-NorCal so thank you Sally!

Great questions. You can be an Iron Chef just by entering and coming up with a dish/menu - You don't have to come up with a complete meal, just enough to provide a taste to 150 people or so. Each Iron Chef will need about 10 people to help out with providing fish, abalone, whatever you need for the dish. Also to prep food, etc between 4-6 show time. We're aiming to serve food around 6pm.

The grand prize is a team plaque trophy and a dive trip aboard the Telstar out of Noyo Harbor for up to 10 people. (2013)

The Iron Chef gets to pick who goes on the dive trip, up to 10 people total.

Feel free to give me a call with any questions. All Big X competitors and about 60 people from the Pacific Star Wine Club will be "tasting judges" and vote on the winning dish. They've donated money to the cause for the privilege of being judges, like the annual Abalone Cook-Off in Noyo Harbor...

Mark, just put out the word about what you need here. There are going to be a lot of guys in the water Thursday, Friday and Saturday and they can hook you up with what you need. My advice is to go for one dish, with simple ingredients. You'll need more than one abalone or 3 rockfish, but guys like Matt can help out. I'll have 3 abs to kick into the pot.
Don't worry about not knowing anybody, there's lots of new people every year. It's a very friendly group. I always learn so much about diving and cooking seafood from RFA supporters at the Randy Fry Big X. Round up as many people from your school as you can, they'll enjoy it. There will be people on hand to help if you want to take the Iron Diver Chef Seafood Challenge!

Also if you need any cooking gear, we have burners, fryers, BBQs locally on loan.
