Which waterproof handheld VHF to buy?
« on: March 22, 2012, 12:02:46 PM »
Looking to purchase a waterproof handheld VHF to keep in my tube while diving. My plan is to get dropped off by my boat to dive some Area 51 places while my non-diver buddies go chase salmon bout a mile off shore. Plus it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a back up radio on the boat either. Any suggestions? I know you kayak guys must have a pretty good idea of which radios are the best for use in wet conditions.

I would recommend this one a little spend'y but when it comes to a life line that is one area you do not want to skimp and go cheap on.

I had the older version of this Uniden and after several years of serious abuse (strapped to my dive board, inside my float tube, rolling around the tank well of my kayak etc it finally died on me...worked great though!

I just got a brand new one for my b-day from my sis/bro in law and am stoked!!

Floats, submersible, wx and emergency channels etc.

Treat it right and rinse well after use and it should last you plenty long...also has a 3 year warranty.

Hope that helps!!

Sincerely,

Jim

ps...a radio makes me feel SO much better about being out and about on the water...hope I never HAVE to use it for an emergency but if the sh*t hits the fan I will be very happy to be able to let someone know.   :icon_thumleft:

Sounds like a Rhino from Garmin would suit your needs.  Radio, GPS, and you can see where your buddies are.

I've been using this one http://m.westmarine.com/aHR0cDovL3d3dy53ZXN0bWFyaW5lLmNvbS93ZWJhcHAvd2NzL3N0b3Jlcy9zZXJ2bGV0L1Byb2R1Y3REaXNwbGF5P3Byb2R1Y3RJZD01MjUyMiZjYXRhbG9nSWQ9MTAwMDEmbGFuZ0lkPS0xJnN0b3JlSWQ9MTExNTEmc3RvcmVOdW09NTAxNTcmc3ViZGVwdE51bT01MDE1OCZjbGFzc051bT01MDE2MA%3D%3D

First one I got 3 years ago and bought the west marine extended warranty.  I always dove with it in my floatwith no extra protection. Never had a problem with it but at the end of the extended warranty I took a close look at it and noticed a small amount of oxidation on the body. I took it in and no questions asked they gave me a brand new one. I bought another extended warranty on that one too.

I like the "floating" part the best.

I have a Standard Horizon floating model that i've had for a few years now.  I'm very happy with it.
