This really is an amazing place to have a dive tourney. Private shore access, kayak accessible, world-class wines. Since this area is proposed to be a marine reserve, it may be the last year we ever get to dive this place.

New wrinkle this year: we'll be having a "Iron Chef" Wild Seafood Team Challenge. Teams of up to 10 people (non-divers okay) can compete for the best menu of wild seafood for a Saturday night feast around the bonfire. Grand Prize for the winning team: Dive trip on board the Telstar out of Noyo Harbor for up to 10 people! Details to follow....

Has any decision been made as to whether or not diving will be restricted to the future MLPA reserve boundaries, or will diving be open to the whole coast?

Ive been on the telstar sport fishing 5 times- 3 times rock fishing/crab combo, one time salmon/crab combo , and one time ab diving/ crab combo - it was awsome and always came home with limits.  The ab diving they took us to a spot not for beginners, but abs were plentyful....

I think they're going to allow motorized vessels to compete. And I think they're going to allow diving to be done anywhere along the coast, not just in the future reserve. That way, beginners can go where they feel comfortable.

I'm pretty sure I'll be able to go to this, just have to register soon. I'm not sure where I'll dive, though, but I'll probably head south to Fort Bragg-ish.

This event is somewhat unique in that it uses the CenCal format, which i like a lot.

Here's the rules, by the way:

Randy's Big X Freedive Competition Rules:
Open to everyone. (Competitors under 18 must have signature on waiver by guardian.)
All divers must register with a buddy. This is a individual competition, not a team event, but you need another diver buddy checking for you.
Only shore-based, breath-hold diving is allowed in this tourney. No motorized vessels allowed.
Tournament check-in starts at 7:00 AM. Shotgun start.
All contestants must check-in at Pacific Star Winery.
All competitors must check-out at the Tournament Weigh-in by 1 PM.

Measurement/Weight:
Use caliper for measuring abalone to closest hundredth of an inch.
Use scale for weighing fish to closest tenth of pound.
Decision of the Weighmaster is Final.

Scoring – Individual Points:
One point per fish plus one point per pound. Best aggregate score wins. Up to twenty fish can be submitted by one individual, but no more than four fish of the same species. Fish must measure at least fourteen inches in length with mouth closed, or meet DF&G minimum size requirements. The caudal fins of fish being measured shall be swept back to enhance their lengths. No sharks, skates, rays or prohibited (by DFG) species.
Abalone measured by length.

Etiquette & Safety:
The Randy Fry Big X Tourney promotes friendly competition and cooperation. Individuals competing in kayaks should yield to shore-based divers in the water & be ready to assist divers in trouble. Always yield to the least mobile participants. Safety is first, competition second.

Divisions/Awards:
All contestants may enter Abalone, Finfish or both.
Each Division has a Male and Female Category. 1st and 2nd Place Award Plaques commemorating Randy’s Big Ten will be given in the following (Men's & Women's) divisions:
Speargun
Abalone
Pole Spear
Junior (under 18) Abalone
Junior (under 18) Speargun

Eligibility:
Paid entry fee.
Waiver signed.
California Department of Fish and Game license and abalone punch card checked.

Disqualifications:
Anyone violating California Department of Fish and Game Regulations.
Failure to check-out on time.

LOL I guess I missed that, or didn't read carefully enough. After seeing the discussions on spearboard about motorized vessels I though they would, but I guess not. I'll be kayak diving so it doesn't affect me, and it shouldn't affect too many people diving the area as they'd have to go down to Noyo to launch anyway.
