Dive site advice needed to take Newb near Ft. Bragg
« on: June 13, 2011, 01:46:25 PM »
The wx doesn't look good for this week, but I'll be camping with family at Russian Gulch from Wed-Sat.
I'll be diving with my 13 yr old son, who's diving for the first time (he's been practicing in the pool).

I've been told that Jack Peters Gulch and Glass beach are good places to take a newb.  Any other suggestions, recommendations or advice?  thx in advance.

Jack peters creek is a very good spot, even if the ocean is a little rough, But Russian Gulch is pretty protected with a nice deep hole in the center, and usally alot of Abs around the edges,,, Jack peters ck in just north of russian gulch, rd 105 I Think, depending on the ocean,I may also be at Russian Gulch on sat, I am staying at Pomo Fri-Sat

Russian Gulch or Van Damme is your best bet. Try them both and see what you and he like best. When my son first started he really seemed to like Russian Gulch. We did dive Glass beach and had a blast catching rock crabs in the shallows but as Calif_Diver said you do have to be careful of all the old trash. Have fun!
Everything in the universe flows. You can't get a hold of water by clutching it. Let your hand relax and only then will you enjoy and experience it.

Thanks everyone for the advice.  Looking forward to camping and keeping my fingers crossed on the wx conditions.
