Swell Forcast
« on: November 06, 2010, 11:45:46 AM »
I typically use the NOAA forcast and I'm wondering, what do yall consider acceptable swell and wind wave heights? If swell is forcast at 6-8 with wind wave 2 feet will you hit the coast, for example?

The swell models for NOAA are generally good, but there are others. I also like Stormsurf.com and forecasts.swellwatch.com. These other sites offer more local intel for specific areas. they are put together with folks having lots of local knowledge. I would consult all three. 6-8 feet is a no dive forecast for me. If you are hard up you can find calm places in huge surf like van damme or fort ross, but for a vast majority of spots, 6-8 feet will make for a miserable, wash tub, 0 visibility dive day. this = no bueno in my book. Others chime in.

All I can add is noah forcasts are for seven miles off shore so I hate to say it but the best judge of whats going on is to be thare. A good freind of mine said live by the forecast die by the forcast
Ive seen noah say 5 to 7 foot swells and went out anyway and found flat ocean. Ive also been out with the opposite and wasnt able to dive. So I hate to say it but the only way to know for sure is to see it with your own eyes.
