« on: August 05, 2009, 07:11:53 AM »
i go out pillar point to fish frequently and go north or south 20 miles; I don't seem to see any divers or dive boats anywhere.  do people dive in san mateo county?  I mean, there ARE lingcods to be had in those waters...I catch one almost every trip...

I have heard that the seal population is high down that way this year and the GWS are in taking a lot of young seals along there already. It is a little early for them to be in.

best place to dive along san mateo coast is Moss Beach, especially the fitzgerald marine reserve, its a look but dont touch place, abs are plentyfull but of course now you cant take. The reefs strech from Montara south to pilar point. The Mavricks surf spot is actually on the southern most part of the marine reserve, massive reefs uplifted by the San gregorio and seal cove faults, bull and giant kelp are found but beware of sharks, its a popular seal haul out during low tide.  I have spent countles days on the reef during low tide and to this day can always find an abalone, was my best spot for monkeyfaced eel, but I think they closed fishing down recently.....other spots, try ano nuevo down the coast, also on earthquake fault uplifted reef,  or the uplifted reefs off of davenport landing, at the davenport beach they have a big abalone farm, talked with the owner who used to go abalone diving right of the beach, also great surf spot, both right and left reef breaks with easy access to the line up....
