You are taking the 101 right? After you come out from southbound Gaviota Tunnel, about 25 miles or so north of Santa Barbara, there is diving all the way to just north of UCSB. Reasonable access with a very short swim out. No Banksing or yaks needed; the diving is a hundred feet from the shore out; bring your stringer. If you have not dove there before just pay the day use fee at Gaviota State beach or El Capitan State beach. Reasonable car security while diving from the State Beaches; not true if you park by the road side. Don't road side park and leave valuables in your car.
I have had many great SoCal style dives there; the water has been generally stellar recently...and it's bug season.
Good luck!

As for Ventura diving, I have never dove there. But the locals from there generally agree, visibility and structure are not as good out of Ventura as farther north; hence the frequent boat dives to Channel Islands.
Spearboard has a Santa Barbara Perma Thread; ask around there about Ventura diving. As you probably know, Socal diving and divers are not as chill as up here.
