I went out diving today looking for scallops, and after switching to spearfishing somehow lost my favorite old "AB GRAB" bar. I have had this bar for 5 years and super bummed to have lost it..does anyone have one laying around that they would sell?

Otherwise, I need a new scallop bar at this point. Any ideas on a good scallop bar that's legal per regulations?

Thanks,
Chance

Just use a regular old national divers steel about iron. A regular length and a short for times when you can't maneuver a long iron.

Steel is better for a couple reasons. It's heavier and weights the float line better. It's also stronger than aluminum and won't break on difficult scallops. I have several broken ab grabs to illustrate that point.

Thanks for the suggestion Rob, I'll look into getting one of these. You've broke several AB GRAB's? Man that seemed like a tough bar to me lol.

I have an aluminum ab iron just sitting around after thinking I lost my original one.
You're welcome to it if you're near Pacific Grove although they're pretty cheap and you'll probably get it faster via amazon.
I've my used aluminum for 1.5 years on scallops without issue so far and I've literally had to wedge it in and kick it to get scallops off. Just yesterday I fought my hardest scallop yet (cemented in a wedge on 2 separate surfaces) and it did just fine. I keep it on my belt with some bungee while spearfishing and it works for me. I usually drop my gun on a float line as a marker, then go to town.

I've been using an aluminum bar and i frequently can't get the scallop off the rock.  I was thinking that more mass might help.  A steel bar bar would be the obvious move, but I've noticed that there are wider bars to choose from as well.  I could see extra width providing more leverage for the twisting motion, but tougher in tight spots.

Anyone done a steel vs aluminum test?

What about a wider bar, or one with more mass?

Stainless steel is more rigid than aluminum. I typically keep a small aluminum bar on my belt and a large stainless bar on my kayak that I bust out for the tough scallops.

It's good to have a variety of sizes. Longer= more leverage, but that's not helpful if it's too long to maneuver into a tight hole

Yeah I've broken two by getting the iron in behind the scallops, bracing myself and pulling like hell. I don't know how you kick something with any force underwater wearing fins, but it sounds like a good way to hurt yourself or break a fin. Anyway, I filed one of the broken ab grabs down hoping to use it as a short iron but it was too thick to wedge in. I have been using ab grabs since the early 90's when they first came out and I've broken three. Two on scallops and one moving a big rock. Don't get me wrong, you can use an ab grab, usually without issue, but I wouldn't buy one specifically for scallops as their design is for popping abs not prying scallops. For about the last 7 years I've had my wetsuits made with a long pocket on my right outer thigh to put my short steel iron in. It fits completely inside including the lanyard. I don't stuff an ironnin my belt anymore. I've lost a couple ab grabs doing that too. The only way to keep from losing it that way is to wrap the lanyard back around the tip, but then sometimes it hangs up when you try to back out of a cave.

I've only ever kicked it once, with my heel after where the carbon blade ends. It was a unique circumstance and a clean angle to not hurt myself or my fin. I mentioned it because my aluminum didn't break (yet). I also use the lanyard double wrapped around tip on belt. The double wrap is tight enough that I have never lost it but has enough stretch for me to easily pull it out when needed. I guess I just got lucky on right length when I tied the lanyard. I haven't had it catch me up on anything although sometimes if it's not positioned correctly when I duck dive, it puts pressure on my lower stomach, but that's an easy fix. I like the outer pocket idea. I had a custom expandable pocket put on my pants so that I can put a scallop or 3 in it. I guess I could do the scallop bar on the other leg. Maybe with my next suit since my current yaz is beat to death like a Frankenstein pin cushion.

You had an expandable pocket added? Doesn't it catch water and cause drag?

No, it is accordion style and has a velcro flap that keeps it flat until I need to open it to put a scallop in, even when a larger shell is in there, its just a streamlined bump on my leg with the flap. I have experienced no noticeable drag from it

Thanks Matt!
This is a great write up.  I've already read it many times and found it very useful.
I'll definitely take you up on your ab bar offer.
