Watermen's Alliance Albion Urchin removal event July 21st & 22nd

Wanted to post this and get this on everyone radar.  The second recreational urchin removal event of 2018. Recreational divers will help protect the kelp by removing as many purple urchin as possible over these two days. NCUH will not be doing a group site, but it would be cool if all NCUH members going could get sites next to each other. So interested parties are response-able for their own camping spots. I know Jason and My self will be getting at least one if not 2 sites at Albion.  Interested parties should call Albion campground, (707)937-0606 to make reservations Albion web site: http://albionrivercampground.com/  or one their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Albion-River-Campground-123583034372834/
to make reservations at Schooners Landing try their web site at  https://www.schoonerslanding-albion.com/ or one Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/SelkieCove/

Make sure to tell them you're with the purple urchin removal event.

and to stay up to date on announcements for this event go to the event Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/events/167251583951557/

Hey all, I wanted to ask and see what worked well for those who dived this last weekends in the ocean cove urchin removal event. What did you find was cumbersome and or worked well for you while diving and removing urchins.  I found that it is more efficient to take multiple bags down with you at one time, instead on just one saves on the up and down trips and air from your tank not filling your BC all the time. I also found a small hand garden rake/trowel worked great for scarping and gather urchins. At this next event my plan is to take multiple bags down at one time and just fill them up and make a pile of them and attach float lines or lines with a float on them as I fill them. That way the surface support team can just come along and pick them up while I stay on the bottom working.  Please share your thoughts and suggestions lets try and to dial this in !!!!

Damn. Going to miss this one.
I'll be there on the July 25 - 30 for the Albion open NCKA kayak fishing tournament.
Definitely bringing dive gear and will do my part on that weekend to get some purples.
I know others will too.

Can't make it, but I'll try for the next one. You happened to pick the same weekend that is San Diego ComicCon so I'll be down there in the warm, beautiful weather instead of the cold north coast.

The wife and I are in Fri-Sun! We are going to try and leave Monterey area around noon and get up there by 6. Any pointers on what we should bring outside of dive gear and a Kayak? (my non-scuba wife can shuttle bags in the yak, or we can loan the yak to someone if she is not feeling up to it - she gets sea sick pretty easily). Is anyone going to spear fish after diving?

C21 is our spot and we can probably fit another tent in there if anyone else wants to stay in "NCUH corner" the reservation gal said that spots 21-24 are reserved for the urchin removal event.

Keeneroo, any extra gear you have helps especially extra dive bags and buckets. Im sure there is other stuff people will chime in.

Bring quarters. The Albion site has hot showers but they charge a quarter every 30 seconds.

If you like to do any crabbing with snares the river surrounding the campsite has a lot of dungeness crab that will make for an easy dinner.

Bring your own coffee. There are a couple of places that sell it locally but it's honestly not very good and doesn't open until 8am.

Otherwise the location is beautiful, the people are friendly, and you are fairly close to Fort Bragg.

My buddy is letting me borrow his mid-sized RV. SCORE!

I'll try to get some additional dive bags and buckets together before then too. I'd love to go spear fishing with someone that knows the area if there is an opportunity.

I can talk to my local shops down in Monterey area to see if they can sponsor anything. Can one of the organizers give me a call to discuss what is needed or if sponsorship is open and welcome from anyone? There is a freediver meet and greet at lovers point tonight, I'll network and try to get some more divers to come up.
