https://www.tsa.gov/blog/2012/05/18/its-time-go-scuba-diving-travel-tips-divers

John from TSA said you can carry on weights.  Trying to get an official policy in writing so we are all on the same page.

The best he can do is give this link related to scuba gear.  One of the stupid comments was provided by one of their staff members who dives and said dive destinations have weights so no need to bring them.

Just wrote him back and asked for some serious updating since the 2012 blog was useless.

Confiscations probably the result of corruption. My wife's godfather worked customs in Mexico. He would ask her what kind of perfume she liked, so that he could get it for her. People confiscating it are probably selling it.
That being said, knowing they are corrupt might not solve anything unless you raise a stink. I almost had my dive knife confiscated in Guadalajara - until he could tell I was going to make an issue of it.

Interesting.

Probably boils down to the airport / TSA agent / circumstance etc.

Mex and other countries is another story.

Also had lead confiscated.
That's BS.

They profiled you because you look like you might thump someone with the belt.  I guess they saved you from being tazed or shot by an Air Marshal.

My wife just sent the TSA a message and asked what their policy is on dive weights since it's not under the search option in their website.  Sounds like a training issue.

Where's all the Mexico fish porn.  Only ocean fish.

Got out first charter going out for wahoo tomorrow. Just been blasting parrots on the reef. A 30+hour drive without stopping except to pee and get gas was brutal. The house is pretty cool. Fit 9 people in it last night. Jason slept in the kitchen. Tequila helps haha.

Did you drive through the night?

I had simple box weights on the belt. The woman said these are not allowed. She did let me take the belt though. No specific reason, just "not allowed".

It's best to check lead in with luggage, it's going to show pretty dense in the X-ray machine. Even when I check lead, they open my bag to see what it is. I've carried it on to Mexico, but it wasn't allowed in my carry-on coming back from Mexico. The security agent sent me back to the ticket counter and I checked it in. If the flight's full, most airlines usually let you check a carry-on bag for free.
