2016 Lobster Opener Report
« on: October 07, 2016, 01:31:03 PM »
Just returned from my annual diving pilgrimage to Santa Barbara for the first days of the lobster season.

I spent Sunday through Wednesday diving aboard the Truth Aquatics Vision.

Captain Graham and the crew ran a great trip as always, and really turned a sow's ear into a silk purse, weather wise.

It blew like stink the whole trip so our normal stomping grounds at Cortes and SBI were off the table. We had to hide behind Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa for the whole trip.

LOTS of lobster at Yellowbanks. Tons of shorts but there were plenty of the Class of 2016 about as well. Easy limits there but the bugs had no size - just barely legal. The first two days were all down there.

On Tuesday we got up to Santa Rosa where we tucked into Johnson's Lee. Much bigger lobster up there, and in great abundance. Lots of limits came aboard with a number of bugs in the 6-7# range and one that went 10.4#.

We had some tough conditions (including a pulled anchor with all the divers in the water) but the crew and the divers all handled it with aplomb.

All told there were about 600 bugs aboard for (if I remember right) about 35 divers. That's pretty close to limits all 'round which is really remarkable given the constraints the wind imposed on our dive site choices.

I came back with 21 bugs. Didn't weigh the sack, but as a ballpark it was in the 45-50# range. I love lobster diving.

Great job out there. I couldn't make it out but glad those who did had a great time.
