Title: just another ab question
Post by: dogpaddle on April 02, 2016, 11:25:52 AM
I'm going to be taking a new abalone diver out that I've been trying to talk into diving for years. He has always rock picked. I don't expect that he is going to have much of a bottom time. I'm fairly certain it's legal but I wanted to ask the question anyway. Can I mark abalone for the people I'm diving with, with my floatline?

Yes...... But its not ethically inclined..... Let them find there own abs...... Its more fun that way

It's legal, and it's a great way to train a new diver.

Usually only have to mark the first one. Once they know where the abs live, and what they look like, they won't need more help.

I wish someone showed me what they looked like on my first try.

I got the gauge out and it was legal so I popped it and on the way to the surface (well not sure I really went more than a foot down) it curled up on me.

I still laugh at how bad my first couple attempts were.  Oh yeah it was a gumboot chiton and not an abalone.

I put it back and found a couple real ones.  The you take it you eat it doesn't always apply.  I hate greenling but sometimes shoot them for my neighbor.  So I am sure someone would say gumboot chitons were a delicacy.

We can discuss legality and ethics till the cows come home and always find something to disagree on. If pursuit was an issue it would never be legal to mark an abalone for another diver. No warden is going to hassle you for teaching someone the right way. It's much better for you to mark it so they can look and you can explain how to gauge it and pop it. They can take their time and be safe and not stab a bunch of abalone to death in their pursuit of their first abalone.
