Title: America's Cup Gig
Post by: Joshua R. on July 17, 2013, 08:18:04 AM
A few weeks ago I got a call asking if I could take an on call position as a safety diver for the Italian team.  I had to turn it down because I didn't think my current employer would appreciate me calling in sick two or three times a week.  Instead, I turned them on to a couple of my buddies with similar training and last night I got offered some weekend work with them so I start Saturday.  I'm pretty excited about it.

Hope they are paying you !!! cause they are getting a top of the line diver with a ton of diving expertise. Some of the best money can buy.

If I would have known you had this experience when I was putting together the Rescue team for Oracle, I would have recruited you instantly... shit
I didn't end up getting a team I was confident with, so I passed the job on to some other guys with Military Training, I don't know if they got the gig though. One of my clients is USA76, the old Americas Cup Boat that is now chartering out of PIER39

Today was day 1 for me and all I can say is, Wow!!!  The boats literally fly above the water and they're going 50mph, turning on a dime. WHILE FLYING!!!!!!

I guess the term, "safety diver" has confused a couple people.  It should be "rescue diver."  If the boat capsizes we go in on scuba and rescue the crew then assist with salvage.
