Thinking about hitting up Sonoma County on Sunday...any reports on what the viz looks like? Buddy is looking to get abs but I just want to shoot some fish. Thanks
-
I am always curious as to what the constantly changing vis is. Hey Matt is there a way we could have a Sonoma coast Vis perma thread?
-
I would say that would fall under dive reports cause the only way ti know anymore is guys who have dove. just my thoughts
-
viz yesterday was great, could see straight to the bottom. easily 15ft where i was in salt point. was windy and choppy though but should be better tomorrow.
-
Thanks for the report.
-
Timber cove had a solid 10ft today.
-
Attaboy, Matt...you're doing us a nice service.
But I think you should spend more days out there on the coast and dive multiple spots up and down it in order that we have a clearer idea of the water clarity.
Especially considerate of you would be reports from the latter days of the work week so the rest of us can plan our weekends better.
-
Ok doug :laughing7:
-
Vis was pretty good today north of Ocean cove. I would say it was 10-15' with a small NW swell and a light breeze from the south. There were alot of fish out probably due to the small swell. Good luck
-
a good 20' near Albion.little swell ,Great conditions
-

Was at Albion yesterday and had at least 20 or better viz while ab diving, wish i would have brought the scuba gear .
-
Had 10 to 12 ft. vis at Sea Ranch today, Mothers' Day.
Not much swell, but a southerly wind had it white-capping pretty well in the morning. Water temp was 51°.
-
We had 15' or so at Salt Point today w/ some wind chop and some 1-2' swells. Great day to be in the water!
-
Any vis reports for Sonoma coast?
Thanks
Ken

Thanks
Ken
About 20' yesterday in Sonoma.
-
Thanks :occasion14:
-
Anchor bay in Mendo had 25'-5' depending on where and in what currents you were.
Gerstle Cove today I could see the bottom in about 25' water sometimes. Careful though, swell and chop picked up around 1100/1115.
-
Sonoma County was a hazy 20', no swell, and a little wind that put a small chop on the water. There was no place on the Sonoma coast that wasn't divible this morning.
-
May 21, Monday, north point of Timber Cove, 20 vis, no swell, scattered white-caps, 48° water temp.
-
Sea Ranch, Sunday, June 24. The vis was only 4 to 5 feet. Sort of looked like a bloom to me, coming off the rapidly growing bull kelp. The water temp was 51-53 degrees.
Hardly any wind, not much swell (occasionally a bigger set would roll through). Fun anyhow. The fish weren't out and about, but at least they were in their holes where my flashlight could find them. It was one of those days that you just follow your float line down till you almost bump into the bottom.
With the bull kelp coming back, I clipped off to it instead of having to drop anchor.
-
Albion, Monday 6-25-12, 10 to15 feet. Better deeper.
-
Sea Ranch, Friday, June 29.
The bloom's gone. Had as much as 15ft of vis. The ocean was especially flat. Water temp was 51°.
Best day of the year (for me) so far.
-
Thanks for the report! Good news :icon_cheers:

I saw this on Spearboard, posted by our very own Matt:
"well I hope viz clears and is better than here in sonoma, cause it is mucky green/red black out over 20ft as of yesterday and the ocean was a lake !!!! If any one has any vis reports from the mendo area please post good luck all this weekend".
-

So if i end up over there just look for the blue beast to find a good dive spot, :laughing7:

The battery boxes are they key...

...calm conditions and vis reports from 10-20ft guess where I am headed tomorrow !
Try hitting a few spots to clarify vis data, please.
The Albion area should be especially fishy, especially compared to how it'll be shortly after the Aug. 2 USA National Spearfishing Championship.
-
Albion had good vis on the surface but a lot of krill on the bottom. I saw a whale in close. It calmed down a bit but it was still surgey. Not very fishy, just some small Blues. The guys camping here are headed to Elk tomorrow.
-
Colby Reef just North of Albion had 30ft of vis today, Sunday, Sept. 2.
-
Point arena had zero vis Sunday took yaks north and was surgie and dark . Couldn't see at 18 ft moved to about 12 got my abs n went home. Sun popped out about noon but that didn't help. Talked to a guy in a zod that went south same report. Should have gone to fort bragg
-
went yesterday to salt point and had solid 12 - 15 ft.
-
Sounds about right hazy 20
-
What's it lookin like out there?
-
The Viz at Russian Gulch was clear as mud. Viz near shore was 2in" and in the middle was about 6".
-
Had a good 10ft of vis just outside of Sonoma's Stillwater today, October 3.
-
Vis was maybe 5' this last weekend in Ocean cove, October 5th - 7th.
I met another diver at the campsite and he said it's from the yearly red tide. I guess the bacteria and nutrients from the deep parts of the eastern pacific get pulled up this time of year, and because of the higher temperature they multiply like crazy and kill off a good amount of the life in the water by consuming all the oxygen. DFG was out asking divers about dead abalone sitting around on the bottom. There was an area south of BB last year that was closed early for ab because of the red tide. They were afraid they would die off completely. Not sure how long it will stick around.
On the bright side, the vis makes it easy to sneak up on fish. I was getting within arms length of the rockfish and cod. One of my abs had a really funky smell to it though...not sure if anything will be good eating next time I go out if the water stays the same.
-
Any viz reports from Sonoma? I am heading out tomorrow before the storm, Friday, 11-16.
TIA,
MN

It was 2ft in Trinidad Bay this afternoon. Still managed to get some decent scallops.

Alex, yesterday 1/30 afternoon, Van Dam vis 6'-8 inside, 8'-10' vis outside the northen point in 30-40'. Water felt COLD. Good Luck watch for developing long period swell this weekend.

Thanks Russ, Dove 2/1 at Navaro. Vis was about 20 close to shore.
Out deeper, vis was worse! maybe 10 feet. I saw only a few fish.
Where are the lings?
-
Glad to hear the conditions improved for you. Did not see any lings either, even in the 'holes". dozens of greenling. Next time with luck, maybe lings.

-
Mendocino had 25ft of viz yesterday, May 16, 2013.
-
Fisk Mill had 8 ft of viz on May 27, 2013.
It was a beautiful day on the water...no wind, 3 to 4 ft swell. Even had a few raindrops greeting me at the surface.
The water temp was cold, though, at 47°. Guess you can't have everything.
-
Sea Ranch had 6 to 8ft of viz today , Tuesday, June 25 (away from the near-shore).
It was raining :o, and the wind waves were confused and bouncy, but at least there was not much of a swell running, yet.
-
Dove near Jenner today. Viz wasn't great, maybe 5 feet. Saw 1 ab, shot 1 cab. Very surgy, not to mention rainy. It sucked.
-
The viz at Fisk Mill on 8/7/13 ranged from 3 to 10 feet.
Spent the first half of the day resigned to diving in the murk all the way down to a dark 40 feet, but then when I paddled to a different spot, I was able to dive underneath it.

Yesterday, 8/29/13, the viz out of Albion varied from an unpleasant 3 to 4 ft. on Colby Reef (about 1/2 mile out), to about 6 feet among the rocks closer to shore.
The ocean was flat and mirror-like.

I dove Trinidad bay yesterday closer to the Indian Casino. The visibility was 18" at best.
P.S. There is a new Gopro down there that I am willing to pay a finders fee for. The gopro can be replaced but the memory's on the card can't.
-

-
I dove Salt point area today with 3' vis in 20-35' of water. The ocean was super flat with no wind and the sun warming up the coast to the high 70's.
-
We dove Albion yesterday, 10/06/13. Viz was 20' until you got to 50' where it turned to soup.
-
Dove southern sonoma and vis was 10-12ft when we started but the time we were done had dropped down to 3-4ft.
-
Praying to Poseidon that vis holds for this weekend.
-
The north end of salt point was a hazy 6 feet down to 40 fsw on October 16
MN
-
Timber Cove on the outside was 25' vis in 35'-40' of water. It clouded up a little on the inside. The ocean was flat with no wind.
-
40 FEET!!!!!! inside SWS
-
Anyone have a vis report from yesterday? Today? CenCal? Norcal?
I'm supposed to assist a scuba class tomorrow for pool skills but if the vis is good I may suddenly come down with a fever and let the other Divemasters handle it...
-
Viz is about 0-3ft in pacifica, im sure that goes for most spots along the san mateo coast. Sorry, i know this probably doesnt help much but i thought i'd give a heads up. The waters most likely a bit more clean farther north and south as usual.
-
Looking sweet up in Mendocino. I went out yesterday (Thursday, June 26), and had 10 to 20 ft. vis with no swell. It's supposed to kick up though, by Sunday.

6/27/14 - 5' vis in Monterey from the surface down to about 30'. After 30' it opened up to about 10'-15' vis. It was sunny when I left so I think the vis is going to get worse over the next few days.
-
Dove Out of Timber Cove today and had 15-20' of vis and flat seas with little wind.
-
How was the Fish Life , Last Sat at Timber Cove Only few fish In Sight.

Anyone able to report on Viz in Monterey/Carmel area?
-
Sunday morning viz @ 500+ yds off coral street-Lover's Pt. was really good, with sunlight noticeable at 25', starting to get murky as swell and wind picked up midday . . . . still had to be over 20' at 40ft depth . . . .
-
Lovers point in Monterey yesterday (mon) was probably 15ft at the bottombut a little murky at the top.
-
Nick, Damanij is out around Carmel right now so you can shoot him a PM to get a viz report for that side.
Sincerely,
Jim
-
Thanks, all!
-
Timber Cove 15-20 feet viz. Great conditions today.
-
Viz report for Gualala yesterday 6-8ft, too bad because the ocean was so flat. Tried multiple spots, same-same. Did manage to shoot two lings in the 24-26in range, one copper, one kelp greenlings and pulled one nine inch AB. No pictures sorry, brought my new go pro 4, got home to watch the video, somehow I managed to turn it off 3 seconds into the dive..... lame. I attached the go pro to an octo mask I got from Mako. The mask fits well, but like others on here warned it provides a catching point for kelp with the camera, so it pulled the mask from my face a couple times. Also just the water resistance when surfacing broke the seal a couple times, I might try the gun mount.
