Title: 13"er from Sea Ranch ???
Post by: livesinhumboldt on May 23, 2011, 08:32:17 PM
This is a post from a fishing board that I follow. It was posted in 2008 and I found it while reading old posts about halibut fishing. Figured I'd re-post it here for you all to ponder.

In the 60's I dove from Fort Ross north to Van Damme, sticking fish and poping abs and rock scallops.  Abs were freediving only, 5 per day then.  I have a 13-1/8" ab on the shelf above my computer now that I harvested where Sea Ranch is now and I misplaced a bigger one I got a few miles north of Albion.  I dove mostly around Albion and Saltpoint Ranch, before and after the state bought it.  The anchor at Saltpoint park entrance was salvaged by us and confiscated at the high water line by the state.  We found the anchor in 90' of water a mile or so miles south of Saltpoint Cove, 300 yds off the large rock off of the south cove.  It took us two days to get it from 6' to the highwater line on the beach, the state was watching us from the bluff the whole time.  Ever try to manually move a 900lbs anchor up a rocky beach?  If the wanted the anchor we would have donated it but it would have been nice if they brought in a crane and picked it off the beach for us.

The part that makes me call BS is that he has a pesky little 13" over his computer but misplaced a larger one.  If I had a large ab shell I would know where it was.

I think it would be cool if it does end up being true.

I sent him a PM on a different fishing forum and he hasn't been active since I sent the message. I will start to draw conclusions when he has been active and I haven't received a reply.... He was active a couple days ago.

This reminds me of the time I pulled a 16 inch ab.  That's right 16 inches.  Then everyone went nuts and all kinds of BS started flyin around.  At one point I was recieving death threats from the mafia and my family felt pressure so I just got rid of the shell.  It took a while for everything to die down, I had to change my name and move to Canada, but it's all good now eh.

Me too, my tens are in a big S pile with all my other shells...  (a 13 might be a different story though).

Reminds me of the famous dive book by stienbeck "the Pearl". Once they knew he had the biggest, the troubles begin. That's why he is laying low...

Hey I found him .... store cred???  :toothy9:

Sorry bro can't do store credit....but....we are going to start  15% off for NCUWH and SB members again. Probably getting that going on the 1st.

Have you found any pictures of the Ab in question? I still hope it's true!
