Title: Kayak support Albion urchin removal event
Post by: Rob102 on May 31, 2018, 12:26:37 PM
I am coordinating the kayak support for the urchin removal event in Albion. If you are interested in helping out, you can support the event by shuttling urchin via kayak from the divers to nearby boats were the crushing will take place. If you don\'t have a kayak we may be able to come up with some loaners. Anyone interested please post here with a any questions or comments.

Is it hard to paddle?
Title: Re: Kayak support Albion urchin removal event
Post by: MATT MATTISON on May 31, 2018, 02:01:34 PM
yes, but with the distance and the huge open sand Chanel boats will be helpful, as it s a distance from the beach to the urchin barrens and that would make for a lot of paddling for kayak'ers. I was thinking Boats anchor up on the Chanel and kayak'ers pick up bags from divers and then deliver to boats and then the boats can take them into the beach, save the kayak'ers arms from the extra paddling, but your rodeo so you make the call bro I am just there to help and be a part of it.

Is it hard to paddle?

If it's rough and you put too many bags it is a bit more difficult.

If it's windy you can have a hard time maneuvering.

Tandem might be easier so you don't have sacks of urchin poking you.

You better hope it's the urchin......

+2 with kayaks.  Myself and a friend will be up there.. Already have a spot reserved for weekend.  maybe three if another friend can make it. Won't know about him until event gets closer...  I can run bags no problem but I still would like to get my limit.. I'll be there bright and early Saturday morning.  Hit me up if needed more info.  Travis

I wonder two things,

1- do they think they're going to have to go all the way to the beach so they're not volunteering because of the super long paddles all day.

2- would a prize of some kind help?  $500 drawing for just those that do the kayak support. Could be one $500 winner or 5 $100 winners.

on further reflection, we'd have to enter crushers too or no one would volunteer to crush.

My guess is they are pretty busy prepping for the big NCKA kayak fish comp the week after the urchin dive. As for cash prize thing I say no all funds are desperately needed for urchin removal and if a prize thing was done it is not fare to leave the divers out and the all the volunteers that are also helping, boat support, crushing and so on.

There is a possibility I will have to be out of town that weekend.  So instead of volunteering and then backing out I will have to wait until closer to the event before knowing for sure if I will be able to participate or not.

I am sure I am not the only one who can’t commit just yet so hopefully it all works out.

As much as I'd like to dive, I can def just kayak... I'm guessing we will be able to talk divers into splitting their day from diving and kayaking. Like if we did a numbers thing where if you're an even number, then you kayak then dive and if you're odd then you dive then kayak.

I've put the word out to monterey bay kayaks and to monterey bay free divers - both are on board for bringing volunteers so there is a confirmed extra 5-6 people plus the owner of MBK (adam) said he will notify his 45 person team of the need so I expect a few more from that. I'll ask him if he can spare some kayaks and a kayak trailer for the event and I can tow them up behind the RV. I'll just have to keep a close eye on them.

I am a little confused on the whole kayak thing. My soft bottom zodiac  is rated for 1200 pounds( including me and my 30hp outboard) . Matt's RIB should be close to double that.    A few trash cans evenly distributed should be ok especially with the high tide entrance.
Are the kayaks for transporting from shallow water to the  boats?  My zodiac can go into pretty shallow water depending on swell and visibility.  I know the RIBs have a deeper and more vulnerable hull so they are limited to about 10 feet if there are no pinicals or sharp currents.

But I plan on crashing at Joes campsite for the weekend unless i have to work.

I don't want motorized vessels transiting over divers.  The kayaks will transit the bags to and from the divers to the boats.

Ok Ryan, let me splain it to you. Divers have a difficult time hauling bags of urchin, especially on scuba. The kayaks take the urchin from the divers to the boats. Nobody wants boats running around while they are diving. The threat of boat strike and just the sound of a prop turning overhead is unnerving, particularly because you can’t tell where the boat is or from which direction the sound comes from. You are welcome to bring your boats at Josh’s discretion and direction, but not to run around the dive area.

And we do need boats. Boats ferry divers out, kayaks ferry urchin bags to and fro.

I spoke with Blake at Subsurface Progression in Fort Bragg. He is willing to donate a couple kayaks for use at the urchin round up.  If you want to use one of his kayaks, visit Subsurface Progression and let him know that you are involved with the event. You have to fill out his rental paperwork and you will be responsible for the kayak, but you won’t be charged for the usage.

He has a limited supply and the number he lets us use will depend on how many he has on hand.

Ok guys, the event is this weekend. I am trying to get confirmation and a count on kayak support. Please respond if you plan on providing support or are available to do so. At this point many who have said they were available have backed out so I need real numbers.

You can reply here, or pm, or text me at (281) 755-7386

Thanks

I'm bringing a kayak. I'm happy to dive while someone uses it for top support, then switch with them when my air is out... if we have an abundance of divers and limited kayak support, then I can forego diving as needed. I only need a little water time to get some footage of divers collecting urchin (if vis is good enough).
