Title: Scallops okay to eat now?
Post by: Malibu_Two on March 28, 2018, 02:56:59 PM
I'm planing to dive somewhere north this weekend, and am hoping to take some scallops. Anyone know if they're safe to eat right now? I heard some warnings about mussels.
Thanks,
Andrew

I've eaten them north recently and did not die.

Yeah but you crapped your pants for a week.

Just eat the muscle and toss the rest to play it safe.

I am told that the last known human fatality in California occurred after a diver consumed a scallop caught near Salt Point.
I do not have many other details...

If you are unsure, bring them by and I’ll test them and let you know if they were bad.

Ugh, none of you guys are helpful. Thanks I guess.

I guess you wanted something official.  Here is the Sonoma warning that said don’t eat whole scallops.

Didn’t see one for Mendocino.

Sorry.  Here is what you need.

You can get the most current information on shellfish advisories and quarantines by calling CDPH's toll-free Shellfish Information Line at (800) 553-4133. For additional information, please visit the CDPH Marine Biotoxin Monitoring Web page.

If a person decides to disregard an advisory or quarantine he or she should explain the reasoning; it would be fascinating.

Call before you pry! I ate a bunch from Mendocino last weekend. The warning doesn't extend that far north at the time of this writing.

The warning extends through Sonoma county, and they say not to eat "whole scallops." Does that mean eating the abductor muscle is okay?

If I was going to eat something that was potentially toxic, I would get the information I needed first hand rather than from this forum. That said...

I have never eaten the viscera on a scallop and have never consulted any warning. Also, the water has been cold and it has been moving a lot. I am under the impression that these conditions don’t lend themselves to psp or domoic acid outbreaks.

As for state advisory. Mendo and humboldt lifted advisory on crab on 12/29/17; the remainder of the State was lifted on 1/3/18.

I ate a locally harvested box crab on 3/19/18 and I’m still alive.

Who needs wiskey when PSP can numb your mental, physical and spiritual pain the organic and natural way.

I survived! Pulled four scallops from north of Jenner and cleaned them really well. Fried and ate them last night with my brother. No side effects!

I was hoping you were going to drop them off for testing.

It takes 48-72 hours for shellfish/demoic poisoning to take effect. This is why most places are wrongly blamed for bad sea food.   :o

I don’t know about that. I think it makes you sick within minutes or up to a day depending on severity. Neurological symptoms may develop within 48 hours.

My dad was very sensitive to shellfish and would have a reaction within minutes.

I was being sarcastic since he said he was doing well after 24 hours. If allergic, a reaction can occur immediately. If demoic acid poisoning Wikipedia says the following, "Gastrointestinal symptoms can appear 24 hours after ingestion of affected molluscs. They may include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and haemorrhagic gastritis. In more severe cases, neurological symptoms can take several hours or up to three days to develop." so he might have brain damage by now.  :o :'(

Current quarantine is due to PSP, not domoic acid.

Still here and feeling fine. And yes, I believe this warning was due to PSP.
