2018 NCUH meet and Greet camp out & first official purple urchin removal event
Hey all Figured I would start s thread as we are in the early part of 2018 and since we did not have one in 2017 !!! NCUH will be holding a 2018 Meet and Greet camp out and dive in May at Ocean Cove.
NCUH will reserve a group site, But everyone is responsible for paying their own camping and or day use fee''s to Ocean cove. I am looking at doing it May as to give people time to plan for it and coordinate it. At this year's Meet and Greet we will hav are friendly spearing comp with either a cash buy in and cash break down for prizes or might even try and get some stuff donated for it. We will also be hosting a purple sea urchin harvest dive during those two days as well to help with the recovery f the kelp for are precious abalone and ocean ecosystem.  Divers can either smash or harvest there legal limit and what that is is yet to be determined by the Ca DFW stay tuned. hope to have a huge turnout this year !!!!

May is an interesting month. We have Cinco de Mayo the first weekend, Memorial Day the last weekend, and Ramadan in the middle.

Ok from the votes  received and after speaking with Josh about this event we have decided To schedule  the meet and greet and first official purple urchin removal event. May 26 & 27, with the 28th be an open fun dive day memorial weekend. Norcal underwater hunters website will reserve and get a group site for that weekend. ocean cove may be  the dive site or it may be somewhere nearby depending on conditions. We will be combing and co hosting with NorCal Skin Divers. More details to come

We need a huge turn out guys.  We asked for this opportunity now if we don't show we can make it happen they might not let us again.  We're going to need freedivers, scuba divers, kayakers, boats.  All of it and we need at least 100 volunteers that day or this might be the last urchin removal day.

If there was some element of compition it would draw more people, maby an urchin smashout and then a 3 species comp and biggest urchin counts as one specie( since we can only take 35 out of the water) .    Also Are "alternative methods" such as a 2 pound hammer accepted.

I thought the whole myth of them breeding when smashed was debunked when they smashed thousands of square feet in so cal and it all came back nice and kelpy the next year.

no promises but there may be a raffle or may not lol, and I know there has been some thought on a friendly spearing comp with a cash buy in and a cash prize breakdown for top 3, but I am still debating and working on that as I don't want to discourage folks from participating in the urchin event cause they would rather shot fish for a competition.  The focus of this weekend is to meet and greet and remove urchins and have a fun time with some diving mixed in.

As for the group site, I believe it is $250 a night and I will cover that cost for the 3 nights $250 x 3 $750 for all 3 days and that covers 10 cars if recall for each night and I have 5 of those spots spoken for already. So if anyone wants to purchase the 5 remaining spots PM me. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join us in camping the group site you just may have to pay your own camping fee I hope that makes sense. We will have the website banner up so you will not be able to miss us. I will also call ocean cove as soon as they open for the season and get the reservation made.

Looking forward to it - competition or no - just good to meet people, put faces to web handles, and tell lies about the one I almost got.

How about a cook-off?  Everyone prepares what we catch and share out.

I'm going to try and make it.  Really want to meet some of you .
But, It's my Daughters 16th birthday that weekend, but might be able to swing Friday and Saturday night.
Can't really commit to the group site.
I'll pay for my camping,  Just need a place to park.

Thanks for making this happen.

ok group site up date,  cost is the group site is $270 per night up to ten vehicles Norcal Underwater Hunters plans on getting it for all 3 nights $270 x3 = $810.
They allow 10 cars per a night under that initial fee and so far I only have 3 of the 10 spots taken.

1.Scott Teells
2.Lifeinmendo
3.Matt Mattison

I have 7 more spots to be filled up at $27 per a night as per the 10 alloted cars they allow.
hit me up if you want one of those spots, on another note the group site can hold more than 10 cars so even if you pay your own camping fee you can come in and camp with NCUH in the group site, be great to have all NCUH'ers in the same area

From Josh Russo,

Hello all,

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for being a part of this event.  It is my goal to get as many clubs, shops and organizations to help with this event and encourage as many divers as we can to participate.  This is the first event of it's kind, to my knowledge, that will have recreational and commercial, freedivers and scuba divers of all skill levels participating. I’m trying to get as many divers as possible to participate in this event so if you know of a group or someone that you think would be interested please have them contact me or let me know to contact them.

As far as logistics and planning go, if each shop and each dive club schedules their club dive or shop dive on the weekend of May 26th and 27th at Ocean Cove, that handles the big part of getting us all in the same place at the same time.  If conditions are unfavorable, the dive site may change but it will be near Ocean Cove so we should all be able to make the necessary adjustments.

Sonoma County Abalone Network will be supplying the material for the event, buckets etc. I’m trying to get some collection bags at a bulk rate but until that happens divers should plan on bringing at least 2 collection bags each.  The large nylon lobster bags would work best as they have less mesh for the spines to get caught in.

I’ve worked it out with Ocean Cove Campgrounds that they will set aside an area for us to all camp together.  They don’t usually take reservations but if you have your divers call and specify that they’re with the urchin removal project the campground will make sure we have enough room for everyone and everyone can just pay the individual rate when they get there.

Thank you again for being a part of this effort.  Don’t hesitate to call or contact me with questions.

Assuming the urchin limit will be in excess of 10 gallons.  Maby we should get a big scale and have a system for every X amount of pounds you return your will get 1 raffle ticket free.
If conditions are nice I plan on bringing my zodiac and can bring a few garbage cans back smashed full of urchins between a few guys, even more if i break out the  scuba tanks.

On another note, great work getting the sponsers and people together Matt and Josh. Its looking to be a good size event. Hopefully the permits can get sorted out and we can  really put a hurt on these stupid things.

as of now it will  be a normal open raffle with raffle tickets for sale, my thought and goal is to use the proceeds from this raffle  to pay for more  commercial urchin divers to start working on the sonoma coast as there are already 2 boats on the mendo coast.

Hi All,

My name is Dave Chervin and I am new to this forum. I am primarily a SCUBA diver with the Aquatutus dive club and Reefcheck. I plan to attend the event and stay at the Ocean Cove Lodge. There are several other members of my dive club that plan to attend and camp in the first come first served area that weekend. We will present this at our April and May club meetings to encourage more participation. I also posted this event on some facebook SCUBA diving forums to increase attendance by SCUBA divers.

My Reefcheck contacts indicate that Fish and Wildlife will likely increase the daily urchin take from 35 per day to 20 gallons per day (approx 1200). Those of us who normally do not hunt will need to get a salt water fishing license. Fish and Wildlife will not approve smashing the purple bastards and we are not supposed to just throw the worthless creatures away. Perhaps we can arrange to add them to compost.

I plan to bring 5-7 tanks as there is no place to get fills. I plan to do at least 2 dives per day and maybe 3 depending on how quickly I reach my limit.

Is there a plan to work out some logistics where people with boats can help with removal? For example, peopl on boats could haul up the urchins while SCUBA divers place urchins into game bags. I have a reel that could be used by someone on a boat. Alternatively, SCUBA divers could team up with free divers to bring up the bags. It would be good if we could work out a system where we can most efficiently remove as many urchins as possible.

Let me know if there are other logistics we need to understand.

Thanks,

Dave Chervin

Always a good idea to take a class but there are spots you can just stick your head underwater and hand pick the purple bastards.  I got my limit yesterday floating across a rock and just reaching down.  It actually took longer than Diving but still got them.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180401/2ed1647e1d54539a44a86bf6d8e812bc.jpg)

I caught several the hard way by walking out to surf last weekend.  They're truly carpeting the local reefs.

Hi All,
The Aquatutus dive club, founded in 1955, will be in attendance for this great event! 5 club members, including current and past club presidents have committed so far. We expect the number to grow.
We have booked a vacation rental very close to Ocean Cove, and others have booked rooms at the lodge there, to take pressure off the campground.
Looking forward to meeting up with You all and taking care of business.

This picture shows the equipment configuration SCUBA divers can use to facilitate urchin removal.

We would blow up a tube called a surface marker buoy attached to a reel. We tie wrap a weight above the reel hook and clip some type of game bag to the reel hook. We lower the weight and game bag to teams of SCUBA divers.

When a bag is filled, a diver would pull sharply on the reel line three times as a signal for the support team in kayaks to feel up the bag. The person in the kayak unloads the urchins and sends the bag back down to the SCUBA diving team.

This configuration will allow removal of bags of urchins without the SCUBA diver needing to go to the surface. This way, divers can focus dive time on removing urchins.

Hey there,
New to the forum. A couple friends and I dive the rivers/lakes around the Sacramento area and are looking to get into spearfishing. Possibly 6 of us are planning to come to meet people and hopefully learn some stuff. Really hoping to make some connections and get active in the nor cal community. We do not have spear guns but will be diving for urchin and hanging out! Probably calling tomorrow to try to reserve a spot in the overflow, hopefully there is still space for us.

A little update from Josh on the event,

Hey guys,

May 26th is rapidly approaching.  These are some things that divers should bring if they have them...... #1 is your CA fishing license. No other license or permit is needed but you do need a fishing license.

Please tell your divers that if they have one or more of these items please bring them;
Collection bags,
SCUBA tanks,
float lines,
safety sausage or small floats,
kayak,
5 gallon buckets,
small rock hammer,
three prong garden claw,
pole spears.

I'm trying very hard to have find a portable CDA compressor so we can fill tanks there but if that doesn't work we will have to shuttle the tanks all the way to Rohnert Park or Santa Rosa to refill.  Please bring as many tanks as you can.

I've been in contact with DFW enforcement.  The debrief on Saturday will be mainly what is legal and what is not.  At this point, enforcement is completely fine with us crushing the urchin in the water so long as we are using them for something, ie. attracting fish for spearfishing or photography.  Each persons daily limit will still apply but 20 gallons of crushed urchin is a lot of urchin.  If your group would prefer to collect we will have kayakers to exchange their full bags for an empty one.  There have been a lot of questions of what we will do with the urchin.  I have a property owner in the area that will use them as compost.

Thank you for helping to promote this event and make it a success.  We will dive rain or shine.  If the water is rough we will relocate the dive to Fort Ross but we will still meet in the parking lot of Ocean Cove at 8 to debrief.

See you on the 26th,
Josh Russo

What time is this raffle? What day is the raffle? How does this raffle work? You put the tickets in a bag, shake it up and take one out? Do you choose the prize you want or do they go in order?
Tried searching through this post but couldn't find many details about the event except their will be camping a raffle and some diving for urchins.

Just a heads up:

I called the campground two weeks ago and they said that they are not doing any reservations beyond the one NCUH group site. That overflow spot is on a first-come, first-serve basis. The manager straight up told me that if I wasn't going to show up by Wednesday to not even bother attempting to get a camping site.

I'm still going to show up on Saturday for the main event and to meet people, but I won't be camping out (unfortunately). Just thought I'd mention this so that if anyone else is going to try to get a spot as a "walk in" they can plan a contingency.

The NCUH overflow is a large area and we will continue to squeeze folks in as tight as needed to get everyone a camping spot for there tent or car. We will make things work but things may get tight PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS KEEP YOU FROM COMING. They is also two other campgrounds really close, Sonoma county Parks has Still water cove which is right down the road http://parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/Visit/Stillwater-Cove-Regional-Park/ (http://parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/Visit/Stillwater-Cove-Regional-Park/)

then you also have Gerstle cove / Salt point  State park  http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=453 (http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=453)

I had a similar experience when I called. There's about 20 sites together they have blocked off but they are all first come first serve. Salt Point is booked and Stillwater only has a couple sites for FCFS. Even with no abalone looks like it's still a busy weekend!

Post by: MATT MATTISON on May 22, 2018, 01:52:40 PM
overflow does not mean you get the whole site to your self !!!!  it means it is an add on to the group site and like I mentioned above we will squeeze people in till we cannot squeeze anymore, now that may mean you may be camping with others and not have a Cadillac camping space but it will enable to you camp and attend the event and be part of the group.

I will be there with at least 7 others. Including kids.

I doubt getting a camp site would be a challenge. On Cinco De Mayo weekend at Caspar, with stellar conditions, the campground was about 1/2-3/4 full. Usually it would be packed with people pounding abs all night.

Albion that same weekend was only about 1/8 full.

I'm recovering from a bad sh***y late spring cold but we can come up Sunday morning - anything happening Sunday morning, can we still recover some urchins with some of you hungover campers  ;) ??

My 10 year old daughter attended one of the last Abalone meetings and is PUMPED to harvest some urchins, so we will get her into some protected shallow water...Let me know please if there's anything official (or unofficial) happening Sunday!

And please remind me on Sunday what each of our limits would be (wasn't clear here if there's a one-day limit only on the 26th, or if there's still a set # we can each pull)

Have a great time Saturday everyone, wish I could be there.
Kathy

Super awesome event. Myself and my buddies showed up having never dove in the ocean or really met any other divers before this. Was super cool to see everyone coming together as a community and we had an incredible time. We were a bit worried being the young inexperienced guys, so thanks to everyone that met and talked with us, cooked us food, and let us roast mallows around the campfire. Those were definitely the highlights. We didn't get as much urchin as we saw some guys pulling out, but I am glad to have helped out in any way we could, and as Josh and Matt were saying, just show support by showing up. Anyone in the Sacramento area, I would love to keep learning about diving and spearfishing! If you think you have the patience to help out please give me a message!

Thanks again guys, see you at the next one!

It was a fun time, thanks to Josh and Matt for organizing.  Also big thanks to Ocean Cove Campground for waiving day use and launch fees for the event.

I'm going to work on fabricating a couple urchin crusher/blenders.  Liquefying and decanting the urchin seemed to be the biggest choke point.

Norcal Underwater Hunters Purple urchin removal Raffle Fundraiser & Watermens Alliance Recreational Urchin Removal Dive
All I can say is WOW what an awesome event!!!!! Thank you to all who came out and attended and dived or helped or just enjoyed the event. The outpouring and support from everyone with this event was just awesome! It was truly historic to see the entire dive community come together, we had spear fishermen, abalone divers, scuba divers, research divers and video/ Photography divers basically every aspect or group of diving and various dive clubs all came together for this event! A little recap of the event on Saturday we had about 100 divers participating in the urchin dive and another big group of helper\'s top side either paddling kayaks or crushing urchins once upon shore. The ocean conditions were challenging and sporty!! Hats off to all those who fought it and got after those purple urchins. DFW was there gathering data from the diver\'s urchin collection bags as they came in. Then for the Raffle just wow what an amazing prize table I cannot thank the Companies and individuals that donated to make the prize table what it was if I had to guess there had to be about $15,000 worth of prizes. There were easily over 250 people in attendance at the raffle. From the Raffle Ticket sales we were able to raise $13,645 dollars that was donated to Sonoma County Abalone Network that will pay for the commercial urchin divers to remove urchins on the sonoma coast which should start in the next week or so. Then on Sunday Day 2 of the urchin removal dive we had about another 40-50 divers working and removing urchins in the cove which I was able to take part in and did my part of 10 full bags. Over the 2 days the recreational divers removed roughly 56,000 urchins and estimated 7,000 pounds in those 2 days. So a huge success! I cannot thank you enough to all who supported this event, I also want to thank Manaro Famly of Ocean Cove Campground for all there help and support for this event. I also want to thank the Alameda Dive team for coming out and supporting the event and bringing their dive rig and compressor and filled tanks all day Saturday for us.

another little update from this weekends Purple urchin removal dive. Word has it from the sampling this weekend from the Purple Urchin removal event DFW biologist confirmed that the purple urchins that we sampled this weekend were in poor reproductive condition and were primarily eating calcified algal species.

Pretty bummed I missed this event I saw some pictures my friends took that went, it looked awesome. I spent the weekend in Kauai with overcast skies and cool weather. I hope to make it to the next event.

Simmer down guys.  To fragile these days.

I know that past meet and greets have included quick intros and maybe even someone with some experience giving some advice to the new guys.  That seems like a reasonable expectation and is actually expected by some.

With the meet and greet turning into a dive event and raffle seems like it had the potential to keep the organizers super busy.

Looking from the outside this just looks silly and childish with the back and forth.  Sounds like this guy wanted to explain over the phone and not make it worse.  The quickest way to lose members is to keep crap like this going.

Well said, amigo! Sounds like we all need some water therapy!

Twid. HMU. I'll show you the ropes in Monterey this weekend! Although conditions might suck, I'm still getting wet!

About 10 of us standing around a campfire with one drunk guy asking about sharks.

Isnt that the highlight of every dive event.

I don\'t think it\'s the highlight, but I\'ll tell you this, it\'s a helluva good way to clear out a campfire of abalone divers.

The easiest way to find out if there are sharks is to taste the water. If it tastes salty, there are sharks.

Test your toilet water, a friend told me it passed the shark test sometimes.
